Our report is hand written, supported with pictures, documentation, recommendations noted and the level of urgency indicated. The report references the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards for vessel systems. All required lender and insurer survey elements (condition and value) are included.

We offer the Pre-purchase Survey and a Marine Engine Survey.

Pre-Purchase Marine Survey

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and the overall operation of the vessel is examined. This includes such items as a structural integrity, out of water inspection, sea trial, electrical systems, propulsion system, fuel system, machinery, navigation, miscellaneous on board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics and overall maintenance. This survey is concluded with an overall condition rating and a fair market value of the vessel.

Pricing: $20.00 per foot - for vessels between 18 and 38 feet

Note: A thorough inspection of the engine is not included - see marine engine survey.

Marine Engine Survey

And inspection and evaluation of the vessel's engines so the prospective buyer or boat owner understand the true condition of the engines. The engine survey will determine what repairs and/or maintenance may be required to get the engines up to good working order. Some problems may not be visible or even noticeable during a pre-purchase marine survey until a thorough inspection of the engines are performed. This inspection is very important in determining the overall condition and value of the vessel.

Pricing: $105.00 per hour - time needed may differ per manufacturer, year and model of engines. Please contact us for a quote.

Note: We can survey Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury and Johnson/Evinrude outboards; and MerCruiser engines.

Preparing for a Pre-Purchase Survey

The surveying of a vessel requires that the surveyor be available to observe, inspect and check many items in a short amount of time. It is most helpful if the following guidelines are observed:

  1. Engine keys must be on board
  2. The owner or representative must have the vessel's paperwork on board, and be available to operate the vessel during the sea trial
  3. The survey requester is responsible for haul-out expense unless alternate arrangements are made. Please ensure all necesary arrangements are made in advance. Note: At the time of haul-out, vessel bottom must be clean and free of any marine growth. If the survey includes a mechanical inspection of outboards or sterndrives additional time is needed at haul out.
  4. The surveyor’s fee will need to be paid 50% before date of survey and balance is due upon completion of report
  5. A good practice method of checking for tank leakage is to have all fuel and water tanks full at the time of the survey
  6. Any shore power electrical cord should be connected and powered up at the birth
  7. All extraneous equipment and gear should be removed and sorted ashore to provide for proper access to all areas of the vessel
  8. The number of passengers should be kept to a minimum. With the need to remove hatches, gear and whatnot, and move around quickly to inspect everything, the surveyor will need all available space onboard to move about efficiently
  9. Time: A complete survey and water test of a 35 foot express will be 2/3 of a day affair - engine inspections will add even more time
  10. The official report follows within five business days. And open communication is established throughout the survey with the survey requester.
